Queens Weekend Mt Somers

The five crack-addict trad climbers who went up to Mt Somers Queens birthday weekend were blessed with fine weather and a collosal amount of crack-haboring coulomb shaped rock and were able to test out some of the clubs brand new trad gear.

1. Claire won the 1st prize (1year Rec Centre membership) for her Transformer outfit
2. Rose won the 1st massage voucher for the Ninja dress
3. Alex won the 2nd massage voucher for the climbing sheep

• Penelopy 'Peter' Spandex was just down one vote, no prize, just fame
• and finally Chris won the $100 R&R gear voucher for his special light-weight performance

Sitting on a dilapidated couch in the middle of the square outside James Hight building munching on sausages was fun like a barrel of monkeys. The bemused look on the faces of passers by, the smell of saucy and more importantly free sausages was enough to turn the experience into one of great pleasure. But this was not the main event. Oh no, in fact the couch was merely a decoy, the main event was the library. A somewhat intimidating building, just waiting, nay, pleading to feel the love of human skin; but not just any human skin, this was time for the keen, confident and perhaps even crazy climbers of Canterbury University to push their bits up against their beloved trove of knowledge, to please it from the 6th floor upwards. I speak of course of the annual library climb organised by the UC Climbing Club.

Monday the 12th and Tuesday 13th of May presented the opportunity for more than a hundred climbers to scale the face of the James Hight building. The event proved to be a great success as the square both between and during lectures began to fill with supporters. To add even more flair to this fun and exciting event, there was also a costume competition with costumes ranging from tight and bright's to a performance by Thunderbirds and Optimus “Climb”. As if all these bright and colourful creatures were not entertainment enough, there were also 3 participants who, rejecting social barriers, climbed the beloved building “au naturel”.

The question on many spectators lips was simply “why?” Well, to this question we have a very simple answer: because we can. And why not, with such a large climbable building at your disposal, why not throw yourself up it in a frenzy of pumped grunting and bright colours? The event has helped to raise awareness of this somewhat overlooked and often unappreciated sport and with such an excellent turn out this year, we hope to see an even greater crowd in the years to come.

The University of Canterbury Climbing Club would like to extend a huge thank you to all its supporters: the University of Canterbury, the Rec Centre, R&R Sport, The Roxx, Goleman, the UCSA, our first aid lady Shiralee, and all our club volunteers. Without the help and support of all the people involved the event would not have been the great success that it was.

Library Climb Success!

After two days of climbing the library we can say that this event was a great success! More than 100 people scaled up the face of the James Hight Building. Some people participated in the best dress competition, others enjoyed the good weather and dressed lightly. `Big Meat' provided a meat fix for everyone who participated in the meat pulling. The winners of the Rec Centre voucher will be announced on Thursday.

Paynes Ford

We went with about 20-25 people (more or less independent) to Paynes Ford, Golden Bay. Yay, and we had a good time around easter. Send us some Pictures, so we can put them online. Acid Test, the Fortress, Temples of Stone and "How far do you get, before you get wet" were great fun. Cheers.
