First 2010 Newsletter

hey everyone

Firstly I'd like to thank you all for joining the club this year. We've got heaps of events planned for you guys and the committee looks forward to meeting all of you. It should be a great year!

So some general club info that you all should know:

-Email forum: We will use this forum to let everyone know about events, to organize casual trips, to sell gear, talk smack, etc. etc. To post something on the forum, just email forum@ucclimbing.com. Feel free to ask any questions over the forum or try to organize trips. Please let us know if you know anyone who isn't receiving the emails and should be, email Carl at patryn999@gmail.com.

-Rec Centre: On Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7pm you can climb at the Rec Centre climbing wall for free. We use these times as our weekly meetings to climb, socialize, organize upcoming trips, and sort out gear rentals. New members can sign up on these nights. During the next couple of weeks we'll be doing plenty of beginner instruction on these nights so don't be shy if you're new to climbing! That said, don't be put off if the first few nights are a bit chaotic, you'll meet lots of people and things should calm down in a few weeks.

-Gear Hire: So first off, anyone that currently has club gear (including committee members!) NEEDS TO BRING IT BACK TO THE GEAR LOCKER!!! And for new people, we have lots of climbing gear that you can hire for free including harnesses, belay devices, helmets, ropes, and quickdraws. (Sorry no shoes.) The gear locker is located in the hallway outside the climbing wall at the Rec Centre. The main time to borrow gear is on Tuesday and Thursday nights. The gear officer, Rose or another committee member can sort it out for you. If you need gear outside of this time, please email Rose at gear@ucclimbing.com. You must return gear on the following club night (eg. if you rent gear on thursday, bring it back on tuesday). It is really important that gear is returned promptly so all club members can have their chance to borrow it.

Also, we have many crashpads for hire. The crashpads are kept at 53 Hillary Crescent which is off of Curletts Rd. Search google maps for better directions, it's quite close to Countdown. You can stop by the house any time, someone is usually there. Or, you can contact Jan at jns45@uclive.ac.nz to arrange a time to pick up some pads. When you borrow pads, please sign them out, there will be a sign out sheet by the closet where the pads are kept. Please return pads at the end of the day or at the end of a weekend-long trip.

Memberships: Throughout the year if you know of any additional people who'd like to join the club, they can sign up on Tuesday or Thursday nights or contact membership@ucclimbing.com.

T-shirts: If you haven't already bought a t-shirt, get one before they're all gone! (It's been scientifically proven that wearing a club t-shirt makes you climb 3 grades harder due to increased psyche.)

Upcoming events:

-Opening Day at the Roxx: This Sunday come down to the Roxx between noon and 6pm and climb for free! There will be lots of club members there so it will be a great chance to meet people, don't worry if you don't have a partner. Again, don't worry if you're a beginner, we'll teach you everything you need to know to get on the ropes. The Roxx is on the corner of Waltham Rd. and Byron Street. If you need a ride or have spare seats in your car, email the forum. If not, it's an easy bike or bus ride there. If you can't make it on Sunday, you can use your free climb at the Roxx pass another time.

-R&R Buy Night: Thursday the 11th of March from 6-9pm. Everything in the store is at least 20-50% off. It's a great opportunity to buy some new gear. There will be some cheaper gear that will be good for beginners as well. Everyone in the club will be entered in a raffle to win a climbing rope. It will be drawn around 7pm. You need to be there to win the rope! If you're there early, there will be beer! R&R is on the corner of Colombo and Tuam in town.

-Cass Trip: This is one of our best club trips of the year! A bunch of us go up to Castle Hill for the weekend, climb at Spittle and Quantam on Saturday and Flock Hill on Sunday. We'll stay at the uni Cass field station on Saturday night and the club will put on a big feed and beer. It will be held on the 13th-14th of March. There will be 40 spots, so get in quickly to sign up! Sign ups will be next week, we'll announce the exact time soon. It will cost about $20 per person.

cheers
